When John Muckler traded Martin Havlat, you could tell the damage had been done.
Muckler traded away the player that would've made an excellent line with Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. Had these three played together, they could've been one of the most dominant lines in the NHL! Muckler should have kept Havlat for at least one more year. Sure, maybe the Sens would've lost him for nothing the next year, but at least we wouldn't have traded him for nothing, and we would've had him at a good price.
Now, the worst mistake Muckler did, was to sign goaltender Martin Gerber to an over-paid contract. The money he spent on Gerber could've kept Zdeno Chara in town. Now the Senators defence looks alot like the defence it had before Chara arrived in 2001. Without Chara, the team is stuck without defence that can eat up the minutes Chara played. Another reason why Muckler shouldn't have signed, is that he could've just looked in the dressing room. So far this season, Ray Emery has outshined Gerber.
So, as you can see, by making two big mistakes, Ottawa Senators General Manager John Muckler transformed a team that could've been a dynasty, into a team that might miss the playoffs for the first time in 9 years.
